ABOUT THE FOUNDER (SCOVIA)

Years ago, I suffered a depression that pushed me through a journey I will never forget. Looking at an industry dominated mostly by male guides and operators with big companies, and fleets of safari vehicles, often wondering how to do it with little savings hardly enough to start a company I knew this is what I wanted to be, and it all started with just $100. With a background of monetary struggle to attain an Education, I finally graduated with BA in Travel and Tourism management. ‘You made it,’ said my mom as she cheered loudly, one could tell that aside from relief, she had hope for a better life. Even though other graduates had it all figured out and were certain with a big or fairly big lavish party to celebrate this major breakthrough, with evidence of decorated pubs, gardens, and restaurants easily seen by my window seat as we drove home, sadly mine was not the case as all I was offered was $100 a week before my graduation hardly enough to feed 30 people, a number consisting of my close friends and family which I accepted with a shine of tears forcing its way out my lower lid and turned back. ‘What will you do with it?’ my brother asked and I replied saying ‘I will keep it and save it’, hearing the shiver in my voice he said ‘All will be okay’ as he walked away. In Uganda, graduations are highly celebrated one had to be really unprepared or unable to consider this life landmark. On my graduation day, we arrived home and with my gown on, a delicious aroma of the food prepared by my family and best friend was the first welcome I got, followed by big Loughs and hugs with no remembrance of who hugged me last or first as it was all fast that the warm and joyful hugs almost landed me on the ground, I smiled and suddenly felt the gloom withering away with the tasteful meal served afterward.

Having saved my only treasure of $100 as a down payment for a dream I had and the big dream was ‘Get a job, Save and Start my own safari company’, I started the job hunt with excitement besides the idea of being able to meet my needs, leave home, get my own rental house could not leave my mind but all this was short-lived after weeks, months, 1, 2 years passed by because I never got the job not because I was not good enough but perhaps like every other person said the jobs were few but the applicants were many as I agreed with them because I had been on quite a number of interviews and I witnessed hundreds of people turn up for 20 or fewer vacancies every time companies were hiring, this caused me a lot of frustration thereafter I suffered depression. Unable to carry the weight of my needs and my family, this drew me deeper into a willow of sadness and uselessness drawing the attention of my loved ones and for that reason, I was often rehabilitated or rather encouraged by my loved ones, “That all would one day be okay.’

One blessed day and with refreshing encouragement, I told myself that if my situation should change, it had to start with me believing in myself and doing something fast. So I resorted to working small jobs that paid wages from selling second-hand clothes and ushering at weddings for which I saved up the money and invested it in Pamora Safaris so far so good as we are a fully registered and operational safari company.

Pamora Safaris is a company that emerged from a humble background and was built block by block with love by a local female tourist guide (Scovia), who knows her way all around the country and is not only passionate about meeting and taking travelers of all walks of life on holiday but also helping other women who may have a similar struggle in earning a living and supporting children in extending knowledge through provision of scholastic material together with promoting literacy in children.

Today  I also prioritize supporting other trained and qualified lady guides that do not have a fair chance by offering them jobs, this has helped them become self-reliant and also support their families hence improving their livelihood.

I am a true believer that dreams can come true when you follow through and I am also here to make your safari dream to Africa a reality caring about each detail every step of the way from start to finish. Inquiries are free so book with us and make an impact on people that need it the most.
